Attendance

Long View does not use the automated attendance phone call system typical of comprehensive high schools. Instead, students and families receive individualized attendance support and monitoring.

Every day, the Long View secretary will make a personal phone call to families if a student is not present for their first-period class. Having students in the building is the first step to their success.

Because being in the building is so important for students – and we work on a condensed schedule and don’t assign homework – Long View has a strict attendance policy. Students are allowed to miss only five school days per nine-week grading term. Additionally, three tardies count as one unexcused absence.

After every absence, students will briefly check in with one of their school support staff or trusted adults before returning to classes. These check-ins are not punitive and are meant to provide an opportunity for the student and staff to develop an action plan to get the student caught up in their classes and provide additional support if needed. Check-ins are usually completed in under two minutes and are important for building relationships at school.

When a student misses their third day of school, their counselor will request that the student and family attend an attendance support meeting facilitated by the counselor to determine additional supports required to prevent further absences and to make up missing work.

When a student misses their fifth day of school, the student and family will be required to meet with the principal to discuss additional supports and next steps.

If students miss more than five days of school in a nine-week grading term they may not be able to earn credit for current classes and may need to explore educational options outside of Long View High School.

The only EXCUSED absences allowed at Long View are for doctor appointments (with a signed doctor’s note) and court appearances. If students are appearing virtually in court, they can utilize a school computer and private room to appear in court from Long View.

Attendance in Jeffco

The importance of regular, daily school attendance as a basis for academic achievement cannot be overemphasized. Attendance is a shared responsibility of the student, the families and the school.

It is the family’s responsibility to ensure their student attends school and to notify the school when their student is absent for a legitimate reason, such as an illness or family emergency. Each family should also ensure their student’s school has their correct contact information so that the school is able to communicate about any attendance issues that may arise.
