Long Views Founders - Now Retired

Pete Tierney     Pete Tierney

Pete Tierney founded Long View High School, along with his good friend, now-retired teacher, Dan O’Brien. They hoped to create a small, safe, rigorous learning community with a functional-family atmosphere for students who were not experiencing the success they wanted in their previous schools.

After graduating from the University of Notre Dame, Pete joined the Peace Corps and served on the Caribbean Island of St. Lucia, where the annual family income was less than $2 a day. He started and ran a highly successful Teacher Training School that was an integral part of revamping the island's educational system. His students became some of the leaders of the island.

Returning to the United States, Pete taught in a variety of unique educational settings in New York and Maryland, along the way getting his Master's Degree in Alternative Education from Goddard College.

He moved to Colorado and spent 15 years running the Youth Unit at JeffCo Employment and Training Services. Under his leadership, they became the only organization to ever win every major national award available: National Alliance of Business, National Association of Counties, and the Department of Labor's Youth Unit of the Year, signed by President George H W Bush. Additionally, he started the Colorado Youth Corps, the state's first Conservation Corps, modeled on the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s. There are now over 1500 corps members throughout the state. Colorado has the highest ratio of corps members to residents of any state in the country. He is the immediate past president of the Colorado Youth Corps Association.

In 1993, Pete and Dan drew up the plans for Long View. He founded the school and taught here for 22 years. Courses he taught included: Shakespeare, Irish History, World Religions, Death and Dreams, World History, American History, American Government, World Literature, American Literature, Writing, and Mythology. Pete loves to travel. Some of his favorite trips were with students to England, Alaska, New Mexico, Washington, D.C., California, Oregon, Washington, Utah - for the Winter Olympics, and Ireland.

In 2005, he received the Excellence in Teaching award.

Pete delights that he and his wife have been happily married for more than 40 years, with two successful, grown children. He is a dedicated athlete who has completed over 200 races, including the previous 28 Bolder Boulders and, at age 60, the Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon World Championship in 2005 - 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, 26.2 mile marathon, of which he is justly proud.

In a long career of dealing with young people, Pete is most proud of his continuing role at Long View High School.
